20 years… and counting!

20 years… and counting!
by Giorgos Charonitis

It’s been a whole life and yet when you are called upon to flash back to its most important moments, the mind concentrates on the very essence: on how a true music festival has evolved throughout the years, 20 to be exact, despite the fact that its 20th edition has been rescheduled for next year and the live performances that would take over Technopolis at the end of this month have turned into internal silences while the crowds that would flock to the multi-cultural space will be necessarily absent this year.
20 years ago, towards the end of spring 2001, the 1st European Jazz Festival in Athens, a collaborative effort of the Municipality of Athens with the Offices for Education Affairs or the cultural institutions of the Member States' Embassies in Greece, emerged completely out of the blue. Free admission to all events and the undoubtedly high artistic merit of the festival rendered it a significant pole of attraction and interest over the course of its development, year after year, to a powerful institution that built up its artistic and creative character.

The 19th Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival came to an end on Sunday, June 2, having offered to all of us who flocked to Technopolis a chance to listen to wonderful tunes and watch memorable jazz performances for an entire week. One year before its 20th anniversary, which is expected to be more spectacular than ever, we got to live first-hand an event that demonstrated the necessary knowledge, experience, and willingness to work towards greater progress and...creativity! Artists from all over the world walked onto the city’s favorite stage, joined forces for a fantastic lineup, and took us for seven consecutive nights on a journey through the contemporary jazz trends around the globe.
The festival was once again hosted by Gautier Velissaris who presented and welcomed on stage 21 musical ensembles that left more than 45,000 visitors in awe of their live performances!

Following on from last year’s event, ATJF’s first day was dedicated to Greece’s contemporary jazz scene, in an effort to support it in a practical manner; the audience had the chance to enjoy the up-and-coming Yako Trio -the Festival’s pick-, the uniquely cinematic and innovative Grey Paris, and the Petros Klampanis Trio, which performed original compositions of the phenomenal double bassist Petros Klampanis.
